What test/s do I have to take?

What's on the test?

The Learner Permit Test consists of 32 multiple choice questions based on Victorian road laws.

What do I need to score to pass?

You need to answer at least 25 out of 32 questions correctly (total score 78%).

What study materials do I need?

The Road to Solo Driving Handbook, available online or at any VicRoads customer service centre for $14.70.

How do I book the test?

  • Online (pay for appointment by Visa/Mastercard)
  • By phone 13 11 71 (pay for appointment by Visa/Mastercard)
  • At a VicRoads customer service centre (pay for appointment by cash, cheque, eftpos or credit card)

Where do I take the test?

At any VicRoads customer service centre.

What do I bring to the test?

I've completed the requirements, now how do I get my learner permit?

Your learner permit will be issued to you on the spot when you successfully complete the required tests and pay the licence fee.

Once you've received your learner permit

What does having an learner permit mean?

  • You are now permitted to drive a car under supervision. Your supervisor must be someone with a full Australian driver's licence
  • You must adhere to the special rules for learner drivers

Special rules for L1 drivers

  • Must not exceed a blood alcohol level of 0.0%
  • Must be supervised at all times by fully licensed Australian driver with an blood alcohol concentration of no more than 0.05%
  • Cannot tow
  • Must clearly display L plates on the front and rear of the car
  • Cannot use mobile phones (including hands-free devices)
  • Must carry learner permit at all times

What happens next?

You will be eligible to apply for your P1 licence when you have held a learner permit for the minimum period and completed any necessary requirements. Minimum periods and requirements vary according to how old you were when you get your learner permit:

Under 21: 12 month minimum period & 120 hours of supervised driving practice including 10 hours at night, which must be recorded in your  Learner Driver Log Book (this will be given to you when you get your learner permit)

21 – 25:  6 month minimum period 

Over 25:  3 month minimum period
