The Learner Permit Theory Test contains 30 questions based on road rules and safety.

What study materials do I need?

The Drive Safe Book.

How do I book the test?

You don’t need to book ahead to get your Phase 1 learner permit, just visit any Licensing Centre.

Where do I take the test?

At any Licensing Centre.

What do I bring to the test?

I've completed the requirements, now how do I get my Phase 1 learner permit?

Your Phase 1 learner permit will be issued to you on the spot when you successfully complete the required tests and pay the licence fee.

Once you've received your learner permit

What does having a Phase 1 learner permit mean?

  • You are now permitted to drive a car under supervision. Your supervisor must be someone who has held a full Australian driving licence for at least four years
  • You must adhere to the special rules for Phase 1 learner drivers

Special rules for Phase 1 learner drivers

  • Must clearly display L plates on front and rear of vehicle
  • Must always be supervised by person who has held a full Australian driving licence for a minimum of four years
  • Must not exceed a blood alcohol level of 0.0%
  • Must not exceed 100km/h
  • Cannot drive within Kings Park

What happens next?

After you’ve held your learner’s permit for six months, you are eligible to undergo the Practical Driving Assessment.. If you pass, you’ll progress to Phase II of your learner’s permit.
