What test/s do I have to take?

The Hazard Perception Test (HPT)

What's on the test? 

The HPT is a computer-based test that simulates a series of moving traffic scenes and tests your response to dangerous situations.

What study materials do I need?

You don’t need a handbook for the HPT, but you can practice your skills online.

At any Licensing Centre.

What do I bring to the test?

I've completed the requirements, now how do I get my P1 licence?

Your P1 licence will be issued to you on the spot when you successfully complete the required test and pay the licence fee.

Once you've received your P1 licence

What does having a P1 licence mean?

  • You are now permitted to drive a car without supervision
  • You must adhere to the special rules for Phase I provisional drivers

Special rules for P1 drivers

  • Must display red P plates at all times when driving
  • Must not exceed a blood alcohol level of 0.0%
  • Cannot drive between 12am and 5am

What happens next?

After six months on your P1 licence, you are eligible to progress to your P2 licence.
