Supervisor guide
The Supervisor Guide shows you how you can help your
learner driver achieve a good foundation for lifelong safe driving
- six months on P plates with zero harm.

It’s not a guide for teaching basic driving skills - there are
many other resources that do this.
The single best protective measure for safe P plate driving is
meaningful experience on L’s: this requires a great deal of
effortful driving practice.
Supervising a learner driver might seem like a frightening
prospect; in fact, learner drivers are involved in far fewer
casualty crashes than experienced drivers. You should enjoy this
experience and not fear it.
You can provide meaningful experience through diversity of
driving situations, and by helping your learner question those
experiences - before, during, and after them. Read more about this
on the pages that explain how to provide long, wide and deep
experience.
We encourage you to read the whole guide carefully and use it as
a companion on all supervised drives, but if you’re pushed for
time, see the Quick Guide for a brief
overview of the approach.
Starting with a keys2drive free
driving lesson is an excellent way for you both to prepare.
A keys2drive accredited driving
instructor can coach you in getting started and help
you both ‘hit the target’ - six
